Police arrested six people on Thursday, allegedly involved with the US-based organised syndicate behind the shipment.
The drugs were hidden in metal boxes and falsely labelled as loudspeakers. "We have averted a tsunami of ice to Australia", Assistant Commissioner Hill said.
In 2015, Australia's government established a national taskforce to tackle the growing use of crystal methamphetamine (dubbed "ice"), which has become the most common illicit drug in the country.
The drugs were detected by United States authorities on January 9 with 25kgs of cocaine and 5kgs of heroin also located. Help us celebrate and post your best ice puns below.
"Hundreds of thousands of dollars of proceeds of crime was located during the search warrant in Woodstock, and about 6.5kg of (meth) was found at a property in Keilor Downs", police said in a statement.
"The JOCTF investigation demonstrated the effectiveness of Australian and worldwide authorities working together to stamp out illicit drug importation, and I wish to thank our US counterparts for their expert involvement in this investigation". They've been sending smaller amounts over the years.
"The Australian public who are consuming ice and other drugs are permitting organized crime to flourish", Hill said.
Australian police indicated that the country's biker gangs, with deep involvement in organised crime, were willing interlocutors.
"They are one of the major and most powerful organised crime cartels now operating", Mr Hill said.
The operation also involved raids in British Columbia on Thursday by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which resulted in the seizure of "a significant quantity" of suspected proceeds of crime, police said.
Commissioner Bruce Hill. "By stopping this, we have ensured criminals will not profit from the enormous pain these drugs would have caused our community".
The previous record haul of methamphetamine seized in Australia was 1.3 tons in December 2017.
