Auston Matthews, Maple Leafs Agree to Monster Five-Year Contract Extension

After kicking up a storm with comments on Auston Matthews' contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs - and more specifically how that agreement juxtaposes the on-hold negotiations involving his own client - Mitch Marner's agent, Darren Ferris, did what he could the following morning to silence his noise.

With players who demonstrate leadership like John Tavares (who was recently a captain on his former team), Auston Matthews and Morgan Reilly on the Toronto Maple Leafs, it becomes hard to see Marner getting that coveted "C" on his jersey.

The average annual value of the contract is $11.634 million.

Toronto selected the six-foot, 175-pound right-winger with its first pick, No. 4 overall, in the 2015 National Hockey League draft.

Year 4: $7.2M SB, $750K salary. The 21-year-old played 62 games last season for Toronto and registered 63 points (34 goals, 29 assists).

Through the first two-and-a-half seasons of his career, Matthews has 178 points, with 97 of those points coming on goals. In his NHL debut on October 12, 2016 at Ottawa, he set a new NHL record for goals scored in an NHL debut with four. Matthews is fourth in points with 46, and second in goals with 23 behind Tavares. They're trying to make a Stanley Cup push this season, but the extensions of Nylander and Matthews to join Tavares long-term have their window wide open for a long time. He has only played 38 of Toronto's 52 regular-season games due to injury.

Bob McKenzie of TSN has the year-by-year breakdown of the Matthews deal.

"It's something that's in the back of your mind". I'm not too anxious about it.

"Neither I nor Mitch wanted any distractions during the playing season", Ferris said on Wednesday.

The Leafs will address the signing with a press conference at 4 pm.

He took part in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey in Toronto as a member of Team North America and registered three points (two goals, one assist) in three games.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is known for his slick passes on the ice.

The deal, which keeps Matthews in Toronto until 2023-24, when he will be 26 years old, also ends the debate of another team signing the generational talent to an offer sheet this summer. Nylander is locked up until 2024 at a cap hit slightly north of $6.9 million per season. "He's a great guy to go to battle with every day", said Leafs centre John Tavares. Unless Marner is willing to take what would likely be a massive pay cut, it seems like it would be very hard for Kyle Dubas to get him under contract for next season. Leafs project to have $16.4 million in cap space next season to sign him as well as Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson. It's also a shorter deal than an eight-year max that no one would have scoffed at for Matthews, as the Maple Leafs look to maintain a bit of financial flexibility.
