The 2019 Super Bowl LIII Pepsi Halftime Show on Sunday featuring headliner Maroon 5 and appearances by rappers Travis Scott and Big Boi has left some social media users "bored".

There were multiple indications that this would happen.

After Beyonce tore the house and neighboring suburbs down with her performance in 2016 and Lady Gaga dived off a building in 2017, there was a lot for Maroon 5 to live up to, sure. Around that same time, the Twitter account for Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which is hosting this year's game, tweeted a SpongeBob GIF.

This Sunday evening, after stuffing your face with chips and wings and watching gobs of commercials, you'll have to wrestle with this question: How was Maroon 5's halftime performance? Following an introduction from SpongeBob Squarepants (a nod to the show's infamous Super Bowl episode), Travis Scott descended from the sky as a meteor and exploded onto the stage to deliver an epic performance of "Sicko Mode".

The Super Bowl started with a similarly forgettable National Anthem by Gladys Knight. Kaepernick helped start a wave of protests by kneeling during the United States national anthem to raise awareness to police brutality, racial inequality and other social issues.

After SpongeBob creator Stephen Hillenburg passed away previous year, more than 1.2 million fans signed a petition to have the song "Sweet Victory", featured in an iconic SpongeBob episode, performed at the Super Bowl.

Artists like Rihanna and Cardi B reportedly turned down the gig in support of former quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

The Atlantic - "Maroon 5's halftime show felt created to be forgotten".

"We thank our fans for making our dreams possible and we thank our critics for always pushing us to do better".

A third commentator said: "Absolutely screaming that Big Boi and Travis Scott were literally on stage for five seconds".
