A defeat against Liverpool would have left City 10 points behind in the title race and Sane described the victory as one of the best since he joined the club three seasons ago.

In City's maiden FA Cup fixture of the 2018/19 season, Michael Flynn's Sky Bet League 2 side will entertain Premier League opposition for the second time in 12 months.

Liverpool, however, are still four points ahead of Manchester City in the league.

For all their illustrious past, Liverpool haven't won the English league since 1990 and their most recent challenge, in 2014, ended with what many felt was a submission to pressure.

Yet to win silverware at the helm of Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp feels the critics may only be silenced by a Premier League title.

While Liverpool have made progress under Klopp, they are yet to win silverware, losing Champions League, Europa League and EFL Cup finals. Guardiola has won three La Liga, three Bundesliga titles to add to his Premier League triumph. It was a really tough games for both teams.

"I have so much faith in my players", Klopp said.

But Klopp, a realist who often bristles when asked about hypotheticals, insisted that he and his players must still be happy with their current status, top after 21 games, following this defeat against the champions.

But I see no reason why Liverpool won't run out comfortable winners again and backing them to win by at least a two-goal margin also makes massive appeal.

"Disappointed that we lost, that is really obvious, (but) we're four points clear, that is the main thing", said the Holland captain.

"We know it will be a tough match because it's hard to play against this team on this small pitch and they also play rugby on this pitch".

"Don't get me wrong, I still love to watch City play but the way Klopp makes Liverpool play is absolutely fantastic". Michael's Prediction: "Manchester City 5-0 Rotherham United"..

And so, as Vincent Kompany comes to van Dijk for the customary handshake after the game, the Liverpool defender pays no attention to his jokes. Youngster Curtis Jones is another option if Klopp wants to give the youngster a chance to impress. We were outstanding from the first minute.

"They'll be trying to create an upset and we know these difficulties but we need to be strong in this situation".
