Police intercepted suspected bombs mailed to former U.S. President Barack Obama, former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and other high-profile Democrats, in what NY officials described on Wednesday as an act of terrorism.
Biden once said he would have fought Trump if they were in high school, while De Niro received a loud ovation when he hurled an obscenity at Trump at the Tony Awards in June.
Bomb experts and security analysts say that based on the rudimentary construction of the bombs it appeared they were more likely created to sow fear rather than to kill. Authorities have said nothing about possible motives or suspects.
California lawmaker Maxine Waters was sent two suspicious packages. Another was found in a Los Angeles postal facility. Even with the sender still unknown, politicians from both parties used the moment to decry a toxic political climate and lay blame.
"We're all behaving very well, and hopefully we can keep it that way", he insisted. "It has gotten so bad and hateful that it is beyond description". He threatened this morning, on the heels of the attack on CNN, that the mass media "had better get its act to together and fast".
The Soros package also had the return address of Wasserman Schultz, a former party chairwoman, a law enforcement source and a federal source briefed on the investigation said Wednesday.
The president revoked Brennan's security clearance after the ex-CIA chief, a veteran intelligence official in Democratic and Republican administrations, lambasted Trump's Russian Federation summit performance as 'nothing short of treasonous'.
"Your inflammatory rhetoric, insults, lies, & encouragement of physical violence are disgraceful", Brennan wrote. The president revoked Brennan's security clearance in what was seen as an act of retribution. The bombs have been sent across the country - from New York, Delaware and Washington, D.C., to Florida and California, where Waters was targeted.
The packages arrived in familiar manila envelopes affixed with lots of stamps, some bearing the American flag.
The bombs seized Wednesday, each with a small battery, were about six inches long and packed with powder and broken glass, according to a law enforcement official who viewed X-ray images.
"There's a number of devices and there's a pattern apparently with them", he said. The address, 375 Greenwich St., matches that of the Tribeca Film Center.
News of the arrest emerged as investigators recovered the latest explosive devices, packages sent to Sen.
The authorities are investigating these incidents and any potential link between them.
In June, 75-year-old De Niro received a standing ovation at the Tony Awards in NY for using an expletive to condemn Trump. Biden said last week that the president may not "know what he's doing" and coddles dictators. And the NYPD is telling me that it also is similar to other packages that have been discovered this week and, specifically, it contains a device that was similar to what was recovered from CNN's office in NY yesterday.
The US Secret Service intercepted packages addressed to Obama at his Washington home and to Clinton, the 2016 Democratic nominee for president, at her home in NY state. Some packages have reached the goal, but none detonated. They bore the return address of Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz's Florida office as the return address, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation - and the package intended for Holder wound up being rerouted there, where it was found Wednesday.
A day after CNN's NY headquarters were evacuated after receiving one of the devices, Trump lashed out at the media on Twitter.
U.S. Representative Hakeem Jeffries said, "In light of the vile acts of attempted political violence and domestic terror directed at two former Democratic presidents, former high-level cabinet officials, critics of the current administration, a progressive donor and the media, America needs responsible leadership from the president and elected officials at all levels of government".
"Those engaged in the political arena must stop treating political opponents as being morally defective", he later told a campaign rally in Wisconsin, before switching his criticism back to the media.
"He better be careful what he's wishing for, that I can tell you".
