Pat Riley reportedly unloaded on Tom Thibodeau

This event shows a clear rift between these two teams, with the vast pressure on the Timberwolves side to get a deal done continuing to cause issues within the organization. That's you guys. I'm not answering to all the rumors and stuff that gets put out. There's been a couple of different incarnations of this deal. Then, the next incarnation of the deal was 'OK forget it, let's just do it straight up, just for Jimmy on your end.' They finally relented on Josh Richardson.

The quote makes reference to one of Pat Riley's more infamous moments as an National Basketball Association executive when he lambasted fellow exec Danny Ainge for criticizing LeBron James, who at the time had spoken out against a series of hard fouls he felt should have been called during the 2013 National Basketball Association season.

"Danny Ainge needs to shut the f-- up and manage his own team", Riley said in a statement released through a Heat spokesman, when Ainge criticized then-Heat forward LeBron James. "I would say s-- at [Kevin] McHale".

Butler told ESPN following Wednesday's practice that his issues with the Timberwolves have not been fixed.

The Timberwolves canceled Thursday's practice.

The results on the floor, without Butler and amid all the drama surrounding his status, seems to have weighed on the Timberwolves in preseason.

Butler, who has been the subject of trade talks, made a dramatic return to the team Wednesday, boldly challenging teammates, coaches and front-office executives during the session.

The Timberwolves have had talks with several teams. He's expected to decline the option and become a free agent, giving him the leverage to demand a trade to a team he would re-sign with next summer. The Timberwolves offered Butler a four-year, $100 million contract this offseason, which he declined in July.

Sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski that the Wolves and Heat were on the verge of a Butler trade last weekend, but it fell apart at the 11th hour.

Thibodeau, who has been reluctant to deal Butler despite his straightforward trade request, reportedly called up Riley after a deal had already been agreed upon and asked for more draft picks.
