The 49ers just announced Jimmy Garoppolo tore his left ACL.

Jimmy Garoppolo's addition last season immediately turned around the fortunes of the San Francisco 49ers.

The injury deals a serious blow to the 49ers (1-2), who had planned their rebuild around Garoppolo and now must turn again to C.J. Beathard at quarterback. His loss is a crushing blow for the Niners, who just signed the 26-year-old to the richest contract in National Football League history this offseason and now must turn to backup quarterback C.J. Beathard to salvage their season.

Savage spent the summer with the New Orleans Saints in a bid to win the backup quarterback gig, but didn't inspire confidence in the Saints' coaches.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, whom Garoppolo backed up for three-and-a-half seasons in New England before last season's trade, said he "felt terrible" for Garoppolo during a Monday morning radio interview. After playing Sunday without fellow starter Ahkello Witherspoon and appearing entirely out of sorts during a noncompetitive first half, Robert Saleh's "D" visits a risky Bolts' WR corps including Comeback Player of the Year Keenan Allen and ascending Mike Williams, the seventh overall pick last year, coming off his first two-TD game.

He threw a touchdown pass to George Kittle on his first snap Sunday only to have it negated by a penalty and wasn't in for any other plays in the game.
