Mass. politicians react to Ayanna Pressley's victory over Michael Capuano

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Republican Gov. Charlie Baker - both heavily favored to win re-election - both got general election opponents.

Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley was poised on Tuesday to become Massachusetts' first black congresswoman after scoring an upset win over a 10-term incumbent in the Democratic contest to represent the liberal city in the U.S. Congress.

Pressley's win echoed that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's over the long-time representative Joe Crowley in NY, and the ascent of Stacey Abrams in Georgia, who - if she wins - will become the first African-American female governor in USA history. The challenge from Pressley, the first black woman to serve on the council, had drawn some comparisons to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who defeated 10-term New York Rep. Joe Crowley in a stunning upset in a Democratic primary in June.

Wu, a programer and video game designer who rose to prominent after she became the target of threats and online attacks for calling out misogyny in the gaming community, had called for single-payer healthcare, a guaranteed minimum income and other progressive initiatives.

The House seat that Pressley is running for has no Republican challenger, which means that her win against Capuano sees her heading to Washington in November.

Trump has angered Democrats with his comments describing some immigrants as criminals, verbal attacks on black professional athletes protesting against racism and Twitter slaps at female politicians.

The Dorchester resident Carla Monteiro, 35, voted for Pressley because, she said, she felt a strong connection to her history, and felt Pressley had a record of making change. This is Ayanna Pressley in her victory speech Tuesday night.

"It is not good enough to see the Democrats back in power", Pressley told supporters.

The success of the insurgents could set the stage for intraparty conflict between the Democrats' rising left and more moderate congressmen such as Ohio's Representative Tim Ryan and Pennsylvania's newly elected Representative Conor Lamb.

"We've had a steady stream, on and off", she said as several voters waited in line for their ballot.

The success of left-leaning minority Democratic candidates has not been limited to federal races.

When given the chance to get behind the first black woman from MA headed to Capitol Hill, the Congressional Black Caucus chose to endorse Capuano instead. Pressley was endorsed by Ocasio-Cortez, and has been profiled in several news outlets.

And in MA, primary voters headed to the polls Tuesday. "I do not think it is an agency that can be reformed from the inside-out", Pressley said of ICE. That I kept steadfast about the hope of our world, and more importantly to the promise of the Democratic party.
