"Jon Kyl is a great persuader", then-Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wrote in the magazine.

Kyl, a Republican, is now shepherding Trump's nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

'I think McCain would be very happy with the pick.

Appointing McCain's replacement was a tricky task for Ducey, as it required him to balance several competing concerns.

Just as Barack Obama, George Bush and Bill Clinton came together to laud the late Arizonan senator, the notably absent president hit up a golf course in Virginia.

"I'm willing to serve certainly through the end of this session, at least to make sure the business that is now ongoing is taken care of, but I don't want to make a commitment beyond that", Mr. Kyl said.

Doug Ducey, a Republican, is set to name Kyl at a 10 a.m. PDT news conference at the Arizona Capitol.

WASHINGTON, DC - SEPTEMBER 1: Guests arrive at the Washington National Cathedral for the funeral service for the late Senator John McCain, September 1, 2018 in Washington, DC.

Recall that John McCain 2017 was struggling with a bad disease and died on the night of 26 August.

Former Sen. Jon Kyl has been shepherding Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh through the Senate.

Cindy McCain, the senator's widow, tweeted congratulations to Kyl, a longtime friend of McCain's.

"So much of our public life" has to be one of the best nicknames for Trump thus far.

"It's a great tribute to John that he is prepared to go back into public service to help the state of Arizona", she said.

"When others were looking into Vladimir Putin's eyes, with an eye of understanding him and reaching accommodation with him, John, of course, said: I looked into his eyes and saw KGB", Kyl said.

Ducey had to appoint a Republican, and politics-watchers wondered whether he would choose a moderate voice to echo McCain, who became a vocal critic of President Trump.

McCain has been honored in a number of services and ceremonies since he passed away last Saturday, Aug. 25.

Filling McCain's seat marks a turning point in Arizona political history.

Joseph Lieberman, a former U.S. senator and close friend, said on CNN: "I say goodbye and my heart will be heavy".

Picking Mr. Kyl solves a potential political problem for Mr. Ducey, who also is up for re-election in November.

Since leaving the Senate, Kyl has worked as a lobbyist at Covington & Burling in Washington DC.
