Ronaldo carried Madrid on this back - Mendes slams 'shameful' UEFA award snub

Ronaldo was named UEFA Forward of the Season for leading Real Madrid to a third straight Champions League title before his summer move to Juve, but he lost out on the top award to his former teammate Luka Modric.

Modric's success, after he was named the best player at the World Cup, means that the 32-year-old should be among the favourites to win the Ballon d'Or, a prize dominated by Ronaldo and Lionel Messi over the last decade.

"We have two good players in nearly every position, so we are ready to go for everything".

Salah was in attendance at the Grimaldi Forum on Thursday, but Ronaldo, now with Juventus, was not there.

Another volatile welcome awaits Klopp's side in Serbia as Red Star Belgrade complete the group.

Luka also won the award for the "Best Midfielder of Champions League" in the 2017/18 season, reports on August 30, 2018.

"We have a hard group and that's what the Champions League is all about", the German added.

Swiss champions Young Boys, group-stage debutants, look to be the makeweights in the section.

UEFA said the award recognises the best players who play for a European club, regardless of nationality. One of his 15 goals was a sensational bicycle kick against Juventus in the quarterfinals in Turin, which was voted as UEFA's goal of the season earlier this week. We want to be stronger in Europe and we want to have the opportunity to fight for this Champions League. It has been very nice playing for Real Madrid.

Liverpool will need to produce some of the performances that got them to the final last season if they are to make it through a hostile and demanding group stage.

The draw was also kind on German champions Bayern Munich, although they will meet two great European names in Benfica and Ajax.

Cavani was the star man for PSG last season as he scored 28 goals in Ligue 1, while Neymar (19) and Mbappe (13) suffered injuries during the campaign, so were always going to struggle to keep up with their Uruguayan strike partner.

"Manchester City are a massive challenge for us", said Hoffenheim coach Julien Nagelsmann.
