Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a longtime ally of McCain, said that the decision came "in coordination with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi". A procession that will take McCain to the Washington National Cathedral is scheduled for 8:30 a.m ET, with the memorial service starting at 10 a.m. ET. The program also includes a tribute from McCain's daughter Meghan, plus a performance of "Danny Boy" by opera star Renée Fleming.

In Washington, McCain will lie in state Friday in the Capitol Rotunda with a formal ceremony and time for the public to pay respects.
Trump told aides before McCain's death that he should have stepped down from his seat as the senator battled cancer.
