The White House flag is seen after being returned to half-staff in honor of Senator John McCain (R-AZ) after first being lowered on Sunday in his honor, then raised again just after midnight on Monday and then being returned to half-staff Monday afternoon at the White House in Washington, U.S., August 27, 2018.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a longtime ally of McCain, said that the decision came "in coordination with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi". Upon arrival, McCain will be received by armed forces body bearers. McCain served in the chamber for six terms, most recently as chairman of the Armed Services Committee.

"John McCain was an American hero who selflessly served his country, his courage is immeasurable and is something I will always admire".

McCain felt until the end of his life that Trump represents a historical anomaly and a diversion from America's traditional leadership.

The Senate moved in 2009 to rename the building's Caucus Room after Sen. Such a proposal would go through his panel for consideration. But while the practice is typical, federal codedemands only that for a member of Congress, the flag should be flown at half-staff "on the day of death and following day". "But the nation that he loved is not done with him yet".

Mr McCain's family said the late Vietnam War veteran, who was hailed as a hero for spending months in enemy prison after being captured, recently demanded that his doctors should stop administering medication because his cancer had reached irrecoverable stage. Jeff Flake, Congressman James Kolbe, Sen. John Kyl and Gov. Doug Ducey will be among those speaking at services in Phoenix.

On Thursday, the senator will be moved by motorcade to North Phoenix Baptist Church for a memorial service celebrating his life and legacy.

A procession that will take McCain to the Washington National Cathedral is scheduled for 8:30 a.m ET, with the memorial service starting at 10 a.m. ET. The program also includes a tribute from McCain's daughter Meghan, plus a performance of "Danny Boy" by opera star Renée Fleming.

"Despite our differences on policy and politics, I respect Senator John McCain's service to our country and, in his honor, have signed a proclamation to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff until the day of his interment", said a statement from Donald Trump out of the White House today.

In Washington, McCain will lie in state Friday in the Capitol Rotunda with a formal ceremony and time for the public to pay respects.

Trump told aides before McCain's death that he should have stepped down from his seat as the senator battled cancer.

Nearly two days after John McCain died from brain cancer, the Arizona Senator's longtime nemesis in the White House has finally and seemingly begrudgingly accorded the 2008 Presidential candidate a bit of "respect".
