Arizona authorities have uncovered an old drug-smuggling tunnel running beneath the USA border - stretching from a home in Mexico to a former Kentucky Fried Chicken. Police learned of the tunnel after a traffic stop yielded 39 pounds of methamphetamine.

Drug-smuggling tunnels are nothing new in the U.S. Two years ago, federal authorities found the longest such tunnel ever recorded, stretching some 2,600 feet from San Diego, California, to Mexico, according to a 2016 L.A. Times report. The tunnel opening was only eight inches in diameter. The entrance of the tunnel was found in the kitchen area of the former KFC.
The 600ft tunnel ran from the KFC in San Luis and ran beneath the United States border into the bedroom of a home in Mexico.
The tunnel was found to measure approximately 22 feet deep, 5 feet tall, and 3 feet wide and was flanked by reinforcing boards and stonework.
These tunnels, it continues, are nearly always used for getting drugs - like the meth, cocaine, heroin and fentanyl Lopez was allegedly caught with - from Mexico to the U.S. The drugs were being pulled into the US with a rope.
It was reported Lopez was seen leaving the KFC with the toolboxes earlier that day, which lead to police raiding the empty fast food joint.
In 2016, a drug trafficking tunnel almost half a mile long was found running underneath the California-Mexico border.
Following the rather illuminating traffic stop, law enforcement officials proceeded to subject Lopez's real estate holdings to an extensive physical search, including his home and the shuttered KFC restaurant he was responsible for in the city of San Luis.
"Ultimately, the ownership of the tunnel goes back to the Sinaloa Cartel", said Scott Brown, the special agent in charge from Homeland Security Investigations division.
