Jose Mourinho 'not confident' of deadline day signings

Liverpool have invested heavily over the summer as they look to pose a challenge to last season's runaway champions, Manchester City, but the same can't be said for United.

'My view is that first of all is hard for me to believe we finished second when I listen, when I read, not much but sometimes I do, is hard to believe that we finished second because you are capable of making people that finish second look like they were relegated, ' Mourinho said during today's press conference.

And ahead of his side's Premier League season opener against Leicester on Friday night, Mourinho addressed reporters' questions about whether United would be getting any late business done on deadline day.

"I will have to focus on the players I have in relation to the first three matches, because after Spurs there is an global break and I have a couple of weeks to recover people and prepare them better".

Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer has made his prediction for the 2018/19 season and told BBC Sport he expects Manchester City to retain the title. "[Sergio] Romero, [Antonio] Valencia, Marcos Rojo, [Diogo] Dalot, Ander Herrera, [Nemanja] Matic [are injured] and I think that's it".

"My view is that, first of all, is hard for me to believe we finished second", he said.

Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Phil Jones all came back early from their own extended breaks but Mourinho sounded downbeat again when he was asked about the new season.

"The list that I gave you before of the injured players is an important list and today after training I will speak with that group [of World Cup players] because everybody is different physically and mentally to see how they feel, how they are and to understand if they think how they can help or not help".

Mourinho did confirm that Alexis Sanchez, who was a highlight for United over pre-season, is fit and firing though.

'You are capable of making people who win nothing and finish below us look like serial winners.

Mourinho has won three Premier League titles with Chelsea and two Champions League trophies as Porto and Inter Milan manager.
