Colorado homeowner, who killed home invader, shot and killed by Aurora officer in scene police describe as violent and chaotic. One of the callers, a woman, told 911 dispatcher that a man was breaking into her home. "In order to conduct a comprehensive investigation, we continue to methodically collect evidence, interview witnesses, and review all available recordings, to include the body-worn cameras of all involved officers", the APD said in a statement Tuesday night. That juvenile was taken to the hospital after receiving injuries from that intruder.
A second man, the suspected intruder, was found dead during a search of the home.
An injured juvenile was also found near the scene of the intruder's shooting, and taken to a local hospital for serious but not life-threatening injuries.
"Officers heard gunshots fired from inside the home, and encountered an armed adult male", Metz said.
"This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved", Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz said in a statement. 'We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very hard time'. "He's very friendly. Every time we've seen him, he'd wave", the resident's neighbor said.
Authorities have yet to release the names of the men, pending next of kin notifications, Metz said Monday, adding the involved officer was reassigned to other duties with pay.
Aurora police and the Adams County District Attorney have refused to answer follow-up questions about the incident, saying it could harm the ongoing investigation.
The Aurora Police Major Crimes Unit as well as the Denver Police Department and the 17th Judicial District DA's Office are handling the investigation into the incident. The dead trespasser's identity hasn't been released.
