Marijuana will be legal nationwide in Canada starting Oct. 17: Trudeau

Stocks of marijuana producers, which have rallied in anticipation of legalization, extended gains on Wednesday after the Senate voted on Tuesday to approve adult use of cannabis.

"During the transition period between now and the coming into force of the Cannabis Act, the Government of Canada will continue to work with the provinces and territories, Indigenous communities, the regulated cannabis industry and law enforcement to prepare for implementation of the new legal framework for cannabis", the federal government said in a news release.

Canada's Senate has voted to legalize recreational marijuana nationally. Trudeau's government is expected to decide a date that would legalize it in early or mid-September.

Canada's prime minister has announced that recreational marijuana will be legal to consume in Canada starting on October 17. This is monumental for Canada, which has now officially ended over 90 years of prohibition on the magical plant that does so much more than just give you warm fuzzy brain feelings.

In the US, nine states have legalized recreational marijuana. California, home to one in eight Americans, launched the United States' biggest legal marijuana marketplace on January 1. See prostitution, tobacco, and alcohol.

The federal government set a minimum age of 18 to purchase marijuana, though some provinces have indicated they will raise the age to 19, mirroring liquor-purchase laws. The council says the USA can not be considered a safe country for refugees in light of the "disturbing" events at the US border.

So far, the United States has yet to respond to Canada's historic move to make marijuana a part of legitimate commerce. Legal recreational sales are expected to contribute up to $4.34 billion, more than half of the total, while the illegal market may still generate at least $1 billion annually.

Nationwide legalization is a good thing.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Wednesday that legalization will begin on October 17.

"And therefore we do not want to encourage in any way people to engage in that behaviour until the law is changed".

The news was also greeted with enthusiasm by marijuana advocates in the U.S. Don Hartleben, who manages Dank of America, a retail cannabis store just south of the border in Blaine, Washington, said Canada's legalization was not only politically exciting, but a potential business boon for him.
