In honor of the holiday, many chains across the country are offering deals, including free donuts, to their customers.

A little bit of trivia: National Donut Day started in Chicago in 1938, when the Salvation Army's "Doughnut Girls" started giving World War I troops free coffee and donuts.


Walmart: The shopping chain has announced it will be giving away free donuts to customers throughout the day. No purchase necessary. This is available only at participating shops across the US and Canada.

Tim Horton's: National Donut Day just got a Timbit sweeter with a golden opportunity.

Locals may pick up free doughnuts on this auspiciously sweet occasion.

For those that want to celebrate but don't want to calories, Edible Arrangements is launching their new "donutibles", which is a Granny Smith apple shaped like a doughnut and dipped in chocolate. Customers will also get a buy-one-get-one-free coupon that can be used any time before June 17.


And even Burger King is attempting to get in on the fun by selling a "Whopper Donut" at five locations (New York, L.A, Miami, Boston and Salt Lake City) today only.

Potbelly Sandwich Shop: While not a National Doughnut Day deal, June 1 is the chain's 41st birthday and it's offering Potbelly Perks members a BOGO deal on sandwiches.

Walmart: Get one free glazed doughnut at all stores. Theyre also running a Facebook contest to win free doughnuts for a year for writing about why you love doughnuts. The retailer expects to give away 1.2 million doughnuts! They also allow patrons to add their favorite toppings and create their very own custom doughnut, according to the business' website. If you want to bring a box to the office and make everyone wonder why you're eating so many donuts and never getting fat, they're now available by the dozen and half-dozen through in-store pick-up and also through the online store.
