Martial, Lacazette omitted from France squad; injured Payet misses out

With Lacazette up front with Martial on one wing, Bayern Munich's Kingsley Coman on the other and Sevilla's Wissam Ben Yedder in behind, the France C team would have plenty of goals in them.

The squad: (Goalkeepers): Hugo Lloris, Steve Mandanda, Alphonse Areola; (Defenders): Lucas Hernandez, Presnel Kimpembe, Benjamin Mendy, Benjamin Pavard, Adil Rami, Djibril Sidibe, Samuel Umtiti, Raphael Varane; (Midfielders): N'Golo Kante, Blaise Matuidi, Steven N'Zonzi, Paul Pogba, Corentin Tolisso; (Forwards): Ousmane Dembele, Nabil Fekir, Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann, Thomas Lemar, Kylian Mbappe, Florian Thauvin. "I have put my faith in players who have responded to that, and the squad comes before everything else", Deschamps said.

Martial will be disappointed at his omission but the forward suffered a dip in form at Manchester United towards the end of the season.

The 29-year-old Nzonzi has just two caps.

"He was a serious candidate for the list", Deschamps said to reporters when asked about Payet as he unveiled his squad.

Somewhat surprisingly, Manchester City left-back Benjamin Mendy has made the cut despite missing most of the 2017-18 season with an ACL injury.

"It always seems impossible until it's done", wrote Mendy on Twitter.

N'Golo Kante (Chelsea), Hugo Lloris (Tottenham) and Paul Pogba (Manchester United) complete the Premier League contingent in the French squad, while Kurt Zouma (Chelsea), Mamadou Sakho (Crystal Palace) and Moussa Sissoko (Tottenham) were named on the reserve list.

Bayern Munich winger Coman is on the reserves list, along with Rabiot, Martial and Lacazette, but Payet is out entirely after the Marseille captain was injured in Thursday's Europa League final defeat to Atletico Madrid in Lyon. The midfielder left the pitch in tears after half an hour, and was later seen in tears again as Atletico lifted the trophy following a 3-0 win.

This hypothetical "C Team" of French stars highlights just how hard a task the Socceroos have ahead of them, when Bert van Marwijk's men face them in Kazan on Saturday June 16th at 8pm (AEST).

Deschamps left the young duo out, despite being happy with the pair.

Another striker, Payet's team-mate Florian Thauvin, who has excelled in the south of France after an unhappy spell at Newcastle, will also go to Russian Federation.
