The committee released transcripts of five hours worth of testimony, taken in September of past year, where Trump Jr. painted himself as a hapless innocent with convenient bouts of amnesia who just happened to have wandered into a meeting with a group of foreign agents eager to tip an election in his father's favor.

Last month the President seized on the House Intelligence Committee's findings on Twitter, claiming vindication after that committee's report concluded there was no evidence of collusion, conspiracy or collaboration between his campaign and Russian actors.

The Senate Intelligence Committee leaders said Wednesday that they agreed with the U.S. intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election to help President Donald Trump.

The Senate Intelligence Committee concluded on Wednesday that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 election in an attempt to help the Trump campaign, supporting the findings of USA intelligence agencies and breaking with the House committee's report.

Regarding the now infamously misleading statement that Trump Jr. released after news of the June 2016 meeting broke - that the participants had "primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children" - his testimony reveals that his account of what happened diverges materially from reporting by the Washington Post.

"We further assess Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump", the ICA said. The theory is given some credence by testimony from Corey Lewandowski, a top campaign aide, who told House investigators that Mr. Trump made use of a blocked number. The trove of information provides a new window into that ill-fated June 2016 Trump Tower meeting before which Donald Trump Jr. was promised damaging Russian government information about Hillary Clinton - from what turned out to be a Kremlin-tied lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya.

Mr Putin said in an interview in March that he did not know until after the fact that Mr Trump had visited Moscow, despite efforts by Mr Trump and his associates to arrange a meeting through Mr Putin's staff.

Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler, from Venezuela, left, and pageant owner Donald Trump point to each other while posing for a photo after the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow on November 9, 2013. "I never spoke to my father about it". One of suspicions is if he came from his parent a call from a secret number he received after speaking with Emin Agalarov, Russian musical star linked to lawyer and who promoted meeting. "I learned about it only afterwards, when I was told that as it turned out he had been to Russian Federation".

The Senate committee's findings clash with the House GOP's determination that the intelligence community did not follow its own best practices in concluding the Kremlin favored Trump in the election.

It was unclear whether Agalarov delivered the letter to Putin or whether Putin responded.

Another meeting attendee, Irakly "Ike" Kaveladze, a businessman from the former Soviet republic of Georgia, described the outfit in great detail to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Mr Peskov invited Mr Trump to attend the Olympic Winter Games in February 2014 in Sochi "and said he'd be happy to meet him there or at any future time", Mr Goldstone said, an offer Mr Trump did not accept.

"I remember him saying specifically, 'You have a very strong leader".

"Q. So at the time you sent this email, did you have any reason to believe that the Russian Government was making efforts to interfere in the USA presidential election?"

Agalarov was a partner of Trump's in staging the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow in 2013.
