Earlier, the United States blocked the UN Security Council motion calling for a probe into the deaths of Palestinians killed in violent clashes with the Israeli forces on the Gaza Strip border.

According to a report from Hebrew media, Walla, the combination of 60 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire in the single bloodiest day of conflict since 2014 along with the Israeli air strikes apparently caused Hamas to rethink its strategy.

At the same time, Hamas, which has controlled Gaza for more than a decade, must not use the protests as cover to attempt to place bombs at the border fence and create provocations, he said, adding that Hamas operatives must not hide among the demonstrators and risk the lives of civilians.

The Palestinian health ministry said more than 2,700 people had suffered injuries and that numerous dead had not yet been identified.

Consequently, the country was invited to a January 3 U.S. reception for United Nations member-states that did not vote in the resolution.

"They had clear instructions to bring a weapon - a knife or a gun - and force their way across the border, not use them unless there was need to capture Israeli soldiers and residents", Baror said.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, for her part, defended Israeli troops' actions and blamed Hamas for the violence on Gaza's border with Israel.

Namibian Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in an interview with New Era yesterday said Namibia strongly condemns the killing of innocent Palestinians, among them women and unarmed children.

She stressed that Russia's position on Jerusalem remains unchanged and that Moscow stands for a two-state solution.

Both these resolutions affirm that Jerusalem would be the capital of the future Palestinian State and the State of Israel. Therefore, she maintained, the decision to move the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem put in serious jeopardy the two-state solution.

The embassy move, which dramatically underscored USA recognition of Jerusalem as Israel s capital, infuriated the Palestinians and was widely criticized, but on Tuesday the Security Council proved unable, once again, to reach consensus.

The United Nations General Assembly rejected by a huge majority the USA recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
