A former congressman, U.S. ambassador and Central Intelligence Agency director, Bush served as vice president to Ronald Reagan for eight years after losing the 1980 Republican primary.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath issued the update Tuesday.

Former President George H.W. Bush is recovering at a Texas hospital after contracting an infection that spread to his blood, his spokesman said in a statement he posted on Twitter late Monday.

Barbara Bush died on April 17 at the age of 92.

Bush, who suffers from Parkinson's disease and is wheelchair-bound, has been hospitalized on several occasions in recent years, including for pneumonia. Noting that as he grew up, he was taught "the right way to respect that tool", McConaughey said that with change coming, both sides need to figure out where compromise is possible.

Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics, he said, while viral infections require other treatments.
