Philadelphia Flyers watch season end in heartbreaking fashion

Couturier had been the Flyers' postseason savior, returning from a serious leg injury to score the Game 5 victor and then open Game 6 with his third goal of the series just 2:15 into the game.

The Nashville Predators solved Andrew Hammond and thumped the Avalanche, 5-0 in Colorado to earn a meeting with the Winnipeg Jets in the second round.

He was the best player in the series for either side and the Flyers had no match for him.

Philadelphia was going to have to win the high-end talent battle to win this series and they couldn't match Pittsburgh's. Since then, the Penguins have gone one way, the Flyers another.

Though he was unimpressed by the fans, Rutherford had nothing but praise for the Flyers' efforts. The Flyers needed more from those veterans and didn't get it.

Defenseman Brandon Manning and John Oduya will be unrestricted free agents and I don't expect the Flyers to bring them back.

Philadelphia did not get the type of offence from their blue line in this series that they did during the regular season.

Matt Read and Valtteri Filppula are unrestricted free agents as well. "It's not like they're empty, trust me". They should re-sign one of those two goalies to be the third goalie at the start of the 2018-2019 season.

Will Philadelphia make the playoffs next season? He had a point on every goal Philadelphia scored on Sunday.

Sean Couturier, 25, did his best to try and keep the Flyers in the game finishing with three goals and five points.

Couturier said he doesn't think he'll need surgery, that an injury of this sort usually requires about four weeks to heal, and that the decision to play through it was his. Unfortunately, the Flyers failed to come through when it mattered the most against their in-state rivals after falling to the Penguins 8-5 in Game 6.

Game six was a magical game for Guentzel, who had four goals and one assist for five points. Couturier took the next step this season and was phenomenal, and kept it going in the playoffs. They are both good offensively and defensively. Get the app and get the game.

He also absorbed much Pittsburgh abuse, including a cross check from Kris Letang that drove Couturier's head into the back of the net.

The Flyers now have themselves one of the best two-way centres in the league - and they have him at a very cap friendly $4.33 million hit until the end of the 2021-22 season.

"They're a smart hockey team", Giroux declared.
