State GOP leaders call for embattled governor to resign

"We're glad that Hawley has come out of hiding to acknowledge the existing evidence of criminal behavior of the governor", McCaskill's campaign said in a statement Tuesday, adding, "The only reason the statute of limitations is now a problem in this case is because Hawley was trying to protect his friend and large donor for as long as possible".

I will not be resigning the Governor's office.

The Mission Continues says it's been cooperating with an investigation by Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, who announced Tuesday that he had referred Greitens for potential criminal prosecution.

Hawley says it's a "frivolous motion". St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, a Democrat, launches an investigation.

She said Greitens should resign to spare Missouri residents the ordeal of impeachment.

They also said that the woman who had an affair with Greitens had been "wholly consistent in the core of her testimony", despite defense challenges to her story.

Any remaining support Gov. Eric Greitens may have had from the Missouri legislature's top Republican leaders is now gone.

It was first reported in October 2016 that Greitens' campaign obtained a list of top donors to The Mission Continues, based in St. Louis, and raised almost $2 million from donors who were on it.

Hawley said Tuesday that it's up to the St. Louis prosecutor to decide whether to charge Greitens with a crime.

Greitens initially denied to the AP in 2016 that he had used the donor list for his campaign. His spokeswoman Mary Compton said in a statement that Hawley became involved after the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported in February 2018 that it had obtained a copy of an email indicating that a Greitens employee who previously worked at The Mission Continues had shared the donor list with Laub and Michael Hafner, who had been working for Greitens' gubernatorial exploratory committee, in January 2015. Dowd argued that the attorney general's investigation of veterans charity The Mission Continues is compromised because of that.

A filing in Cole County Circuit Court says Hawley should be barred from any probe related to Greitens because the attorney general called on Greitens to resign following a legislative report that contained allegations that Greitens had been physically aggressive toward a woman during sexual encounters in 2015.
