YouTube updates its policies on videos featuring guns

The company stated in the blog post that it is working with smartphone makers such as Asus, LG, Motorola, Nokia and Samsung to begin with and that the feature should start rolling out in the coming months. A YouTube spokeswoman told PCMag: "While we've long prohibited the sale of firearms, we recently notified creators of updates we will be making around content promoting the sale or manufacture of firearms and their accessories".

In February, shortly after the Parkland, Florida, shooting that claimed 17 lives and reinvigorated the debate about gun control, YouTube attempted to clamp down on conspiracy videos.

As you might note this also covers accessories which includes accessories that will allow a firearm to simulate automatic fire, or an accessory that can convert a firearm to do so, along with high capacity magazine kits.


Spike's Tactical, the same company that came under scrutiny for a January advertisement that some said promoted violence against protesters, said its video channel was removed by the online distribution platform Tuesday.

As far as YouTube's upcoming music service goes, it is expected to have contracts with every major music production company possible, including Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music, Warner Music Group and a group of independent labels, called Merlin.

Spike's Tactical, a firearms company, said in a post on Facebook that it was suspended from YouTube due to "repeated or severe violations" of the video platform's guidelines.


Don't be surprised if other firearm channels copy InRangeTV's unusual distribution choice, especially as more of them are banned from YouTube. Earlier this week, YouTube Kids was criticized after a video provided its young audience with step-by-step instructions on how to create an air gun.

Google did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.
